Custom Furniture Design

Some projects require solutions that extend beyond standard or modified furniture configurations. Formaspace’s in-house Co-Create: Fit & Finish design service provides a structured approach for developing custom furniture solutions that address specialized workflows, technical requirements, and spatial constraints.

By bringing Design, Engineering, and Manufacturing together early in the process, Formaspace is able to develop solutions that are intentional, feasible, and aligned with how spaces are actually used.

CO-CREATE: FIT & FINISH

Co-Create: Fit & Finish is Formaspace’s structured approach to developing fully custom furniture solutions when standard or modified configurations are not sufficient. The process provides a clear framework for managing complexity while maintaining alignment between design intent, technical feasibility, and manufacturing execution.

Through early collaboration, Formaspace works closely with clients to identify requirements, constraints, and opportunities—often uncovering efficiencies or challenges that may not be immediately apparent. This upfront alignment helps ensure custom solutions are intentional, buildable, and aligned with how the space will be used.

Co-Create is supported by Formaspace’s large-scale manufacturing operation and established vendor network. Long-standing supplier relationships and purchasing leverage enable efficient sourcing of materials and components, helping control costs and support predictable outcomes without compromising quality.

The process is applied when a project requires original design development, specialized engineering, or fabrication methods beyond existing models. Custom projects are organized into three clear stages: Define, Design, and Deliver.

1. Define — Understanding the Need

The Define stage establishes clarity before design work begins. Formaspace works closely with clients to develop a complete understanding of project goals, workflows, and constraints, ensuring the right problem is being solved and resulting in a clearly documented scope and defined design intent.

Key activities include:

  • Requirements and needs assessment
  • Workflow and space evaluation
  • Clarification of constraints, timelines, and project parameters
  • Stakeholder and decision-maker alignment

2. Design — Translating Intent Into Buildable Solutions

During the Design stage, Design and Engineering collaborate to develop solutions that are functional, manufacturable, and aligned with project objectives. Concepts are refined through iteration to balance performance, feasibility, and clarity, resulting in a complete, validated design package ready for production.

Design and Engineering focus on::

  • Layout, configuration, and material selection
  • Technical feasibility and performance requirements
  • Iterative review and refinement
  • Clear documentation to support manufacturing

3. Deliver — Fabrication, Quality Control, and Installation Support

During the Deliver stage, approved designs move into production at Formaspace’s U.S. manufacturing facilities, where skilled work cells and automation support efficient custom fabrication. Ongoing coordination and quality control ensure each product is built to specification and prepared for installation.

Production and quality support include:

  • Coordinated scheduling and vendor management
  • Ongoing oversight throughout fabrication
  • Quality inspections at key stages
  • Final review prior to shipment
