May 5th, 2007 – Austin, TX – Formaspace Technical Furniture has joined the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), the nation's foremost coalition of leaders from every sector of the building industry, working to promote buildings that are environmentally responsible, profitable and healthy places to live and work. The U.S. Green Building Council's core purpose is to transform the way buildings and communities are designed, built and operated, enabling an environmentally and socially responsible, healthy, and prosperous environment that improves the quality of life.
The LEED Green Building Rating System is a nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high performance green buildings. A whole-building approach to sustainability is recognizing performance in five key areas of human and environmental health: sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection, and indoor environmental quality.
"We are delighted to be among the foremost environmental sustainability leaders in our industry" said Formaspace CEO Jeff Turk. "Our efforts to reach total environmental sustainability are a great match with the U.S. Green Building Council."
Formaspace has had a long history of environmental leadership, including:
An active and long-standing recycling program. Steel, wood, and paper materials follow the three tenants of green usage – reduce, reuse, and recycle. For example, investments in information technology create lower paper consumption. Custom crating reuses scrap material from the production process. Waste steel is melted and recycled.
An effort to reduce consumption of energy. Lighting fixtures and bulbs have been replaced with more energy efficient options, and new technology is constantly being evaluated to determine whether more energy efficient or cost effective options are available.
Replacement of computer monitors. CRT monitors have been replaced with newer LCD monitors, which reduce energy consumption, heat and a number of unhealthy byproducts. LCD monitors have a longer life and don't produce as much toxic waste as CRTs when they are retired.
HVAC system upgrades. Insulation has been replaced and thermostats replaced with computerized units for lower energy consumption.
Production equipment replacements. Inefficient air compressors, the #1 source of power consumption in most modern plants, have been replaced with ultra-efficient rotary-screw units. Diesel forklifts were replaced by units running on clean LNG. Formaspace's production facilities operate using 80% redirected natural light.
